Gallery Lighting

Gallery Lighting is possibly the most important decision when it comes to the display of work in your art gallery. It’s so important to create a lighting design that will represent the colours used by the artist, so that the viewer gets the full impact of the artist’s intentions.

We have the knowledge and experience to create an art gallery lighting system that’s both visually and cost effective. To see our full range of Lights go to our Lights Shop

I find that gallery owners and curators take just as much care about lighting their artwork as they do when evaluating their exhibits. It's often a very personal thing and even if I think that for absolute lighting perfection it should be done another way, I fully realise that what I think is secondary to what that owner or curator prefers.

Gallery Lights

Of course there are some basics which should be followed by any gallery, for instance, the Colour Rendering (CRI) of the lighting which should be 90+, otherwise the colours of the artwork will be compromised.

Additionally the actual physical look of the lighting often needs to be discrete, especially if there are low ceilings as even though the artwork is the star, the supporting cast also need to look good! Then there is the control of the lighting to be considered - if this is a large and complex space then probably the control will be via the DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) protocol. Less complex but versatile control and dimming can be achieved by fully using the features of 3 Circuit gallery track lighting.

Only by matching the gallery’s owners preferences and budget with best lighting practice and products can a visually stunning and effective lighting solution be made. I like to meet and generate and warm and trusting working relationship with our clients which is why I always offer a no obligation Site Visit where I can understand what they require in a new or refurbished gallery lighting system. Lighting calculations, simulations and gallery light samples are all part of our service.

Gallery Lighting UK

We have provided lighting for many art galleries in the UK including the Tate Modern.

Gallery lighting is probably the most important contributing factor in a gallery’s success apart from the choice of the artworks themselves.

Think about that. If you have bland washed out gallery lights illuminating fabulous art then it cannot possibly look it’s best nor be as the artist intended it.

Gallery Track Lighting

Of course, every gallery is different. A few years ago we specified and supplied the gallery track lighting for JD Malat’s gallery in Davies Street Mayfair.

This was a blank sheet of paper with large spaces on two floors to light.

It has been an astonishing success and whilst we would not claim to be solely responsible for that we do feel pride in having been responsible for at least some of that success.

At perhaps the other end of the scale we have lit many other galleries which have far more challenging layouts: low headroom, awkward shapes and ancient buildings!

We are always ready to discuss and advise on any aspect of gallery lighting so if there’s something you need to know then please do get in touch!

All the lights in this range have a CRI (Colour Rendering Index) of greater than 90. Perfect for artwork. For more information about CRI and other things to consider when choosing art gallery lighting, see our Art Gallery Lighting info page .
